K-Pop Group NewJeans Parts Ways with Agency Amid Allegations of Mistreatment

Uncertainty Looms for NewJeans After Failed Ultimatum

Chart-topping K-pop group NewJeans has announced its departure from agency Ador, a subsidiary of Hybe, citing allegations of "mistreatment" and "manipulation." However, Ador maintains that the group remains bound by its contractual obligations, asserting no breaches on its part.

The dispute, made public during a late-night press conference, is the latest in a series of controversies involving NewJeans and its former producer, Min Hee-Jin. Min departed Ador in August amid allegations of planning a split from Hybe to make NewJeans independent—claims she has denied.

Allegations of Workplace Harassment
NewJeans member Hanni accused the agency of workplace harassment, alleging deliberate miscommunication and manipulation. "This is not the work ethic we respect, nor one we want to be a part of," she said, emphasizing the group's unwillingness to continue under Ador's management.

Another member, Haerin, criticized the agency's financial demands, calling the idea of the group paying contract breach fees "nonsensical."

Legal and Financial Implications
NewJeans' contracts with Ador were originally set to run until 2029, including a clause allowing unilateral termination in cases of contractual breaches. The group issued a legal notice to Ador on November 13, demanding resolution of alleged violations within 14 days. With no agreement reached, the matter may escalate to court.

Reports estimate that terminating the contracts early could cost NewJeans approximately 300 billion South Korean Won (about £170 million), though the group disputes any liability for such fees.

Industry and Fan Fallout
The controversy comes amid a broader rift between Hybe Chairman Bang Si-Hyuk and Min Hee-Jin. Min has accused Hybe of copying NewJeans' style with its new girl group, Illit, while NewJeans has expressed a desire to reunite with Min.

Fans are now grappling with the possibility that the group may be unable to continue using its name after the contract ends. Despite Ador’s calls for reconciliation, the group’s statement signals a deep breakdown in trust.

Hybe shares have already taken a hit, dropping 4% in Seoul trading following the announcement.

Formed in 2022, NewJeans quickly rose to global fame with hits like Super Shy and OMG, becoming one of Hybe’s most successful acts alongside BTS. However, the unresolved legal and financial disputes cast a shadow over the future of one of K-pop’s brightest stars.
