Yunus and Khaleda Exchange Greetings at Armed Forces Day Reception

Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia exchanged warm greetings during the Armed Forces Day reception held at Senakunja on Thursday. Upon her arrival, Khaleda was seated beside Dr. Yunus, and the two engaged in a cordial conversation, sharing smiles and pleasantries.  

This event marked a significant moment as 79-year-old Khaleda Zia, a former Prime Minister, made her first public appearance at a state function in six years, following her imprisonment in February 2018. It was also her first participation in the Armed Forces Day reception at Senakunja in 12 years, her last appearance being in 2012. She was accompanied by her late son Arafat Rahman Koko's wife and departed from her Gulshan residence around 3:30 PM, arriving at the venue at approximately 3:45 PM.  

Speaking at the event, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed gratitude to the Chief Adviser and the armed forces, including the chiefs of the three services, for extending the invitation to Khaleda. He highlighted her lifelong dedication to protecting democracy, independence, and sovereignty. "The entire nation is happy, and we are grateful for the honor bestowed upon Madam (Khaleda)," Fakhrul said.  

Khaleda Zia’s invitation to the reception came on Tuesday night, when Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, Chief of General Staff (CGS), and Lieutenant General ASM Kamrul Ahsan, Principal Staff Officer (PSO), personally handed over the letter to her.  

A total of 26 BNP leaders, including Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were also invited to the event.  

The celebration of Armed Forces Day, commemorating the establishment of the army, navy, and air force during the 1971 Liberation War, was marked by various programs filled with festivity and enthusiasm. Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus attended the event as the chief guest, underscoring the significance of the day for the nation.
