People Will Decide Which Party Joins Politics or Elections: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated on Wednesday that it is the people of the country who will decide who participates in elections and engages in politics.

“As a political party, we do not have the authority to determine this. There seems to be some misunderstanding. An adviser mentioned that BNP facilitated the Awami League's political activities, but this is not accurate. We have clarified our position,” he remarked while addressing a program in Sreepur, Fulgazi upazila of Feni. The event was organized to distribute educational materials and corrugated iron sheets to flood-affected individuals.

Fakhrul emphasized that BNP has never obstructed any party from joining elections. However, he asserted that individuals responsible for crimes such as killing people, laundering money abroad, and destroying national resources, including Sheikh Hasina, must face justice.

Regarding the interim government, Fakhrul stated that it has already restored peace and order. “Can Awami League supporters continue their oppressive activities now? They should be given some time to complete their work,” he said, expressing hope that elections would soon lead to the formation of a government truly representative of the people. “We believe it’s better to expedite the process,” he added.

He urged party activists to stay united, stating that the removal of remnants of the Awami League's tenure would require significant effort. He noted ongoing attempts to arrange advanced medical treatment abroad for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The event was attended by several BNP leaders, including standing committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny, Chairperson’s adviser Prof. Joynal Abedin, former lawmaker Rehana Akter Ranu, and Chattogram Divisional Organizing Secretary Mahbube Rahman Shamim.
