Bangladesh Women's Team Seals ODI Series with Five-Wicket Win Over Ireland
The Bangladesh Women's cricket team secured the three-match ODI series against Ireland with a game to spare, clinching a commanding five-wicket victory in the second match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.
Opting to bat first, Ireland managed 193-6 in their allotted overs, a target Bangladesh chased down comfortably, reaching 197-5 in 43.5 overs.
Opener Fargana Hoque Pinky led the charge with a well-constructed 50 off 89 balls, including six boundaries. Sharmin Akhter Supta, who starred in the first match with a scintillating 96, contributed a solid 43.
Captain Nigar Sultana Joty added momentum with a brisk 40 off 39 balls, striking four fours and a six. Shorna Akter, unbeaten on 29 off 29 balls, sealed the win with a boundary.
The chase began shakily with opener Murshida Khatun dismissed for six. However, Fargana and Supta steadied the innings with an 85-run partnership for the second wicket.
Ireland's Laura Delany broke the stand, triggering a mini-collapse as Bangladesh lost three quick wickets for 29 runs. But Joty and Shorna steadied the ship with a 53-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Despite Joty's late dismissal, Shorna guided the team to victory with ease.
Ireland’s batting improved significantly compared to their first-match debacle, where they were bowled out for just 98. Captain Amy Hunter led the way with a resilient 68, supported by Orla Prendergast's 37 and Laura Delany's 33.
Sultana Khatun claimed two wickets for Bangladesh, while Nahida Akter and Shorna Akter took one each.
With the series secured, Bangladesh now faces a crucial challenge. They must win the final ODI against Ireland and all three matches in their upcoming series against the West Indies to secure direct qualification for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India next year.
